BREAKDOWN

Rock of Ages
Musical by Chris D’Arienzo

SYNOPSIS

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace, and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage, and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri, and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands such as Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, and more holds the answer.

CONTENT NOTE: This show includes themes of drug and alcohol use as well as objectification of women and a scene of police violence. For specific intimacy, please refer to the character descriptions below.

CAST SIZE: 14 Adults

DREW (any ethnicity): An appealing, good-guy rocker with great, easy comedic timing, a boyish charm, vulnerability, and a very strong rock tenor voice. Drew works at the legendary Bourbon Room, hoping and waiting for his dreams to come true. He finds an instant attraction to Sherrie, the beautiful new arrival from the Midwest, who encourages him to go after his dreams. Drew kisses Sherrie.

SHERRIE (any ethnicity): Fresh-faced, innocent Midwestern girl stepping right off the bus into a new world to pursue her dreams of stardom. Strong comedic timing, strong rock belt, and good movement ability. You should be comfortable wearing revealing/skimpy clothing as Sherrie appears and dances as a “stripper.” Sherrie kisses Drew, and Stacee touches her chest.

LONNY (any ethnicity): The narrator of the piece –  charming, mischievous, welcoming, vibrant personality, a guy who would be fun to spend one drunken night with. Strong, honest comedic timing and improv skills, and strong rock vocals. Lonny appears running with his pants around his ankles.

DENNIS DUPREE (any ethnicity): Classic stoner-type guy who runs the famous Bourbon Room club. Torn about whether he should sell the club to Hertz, a German businessman. Very strong comedic timing. A laid-back, easygoing dude. Bari-tenor rock vocals.

STACEE JAXX/FATHER (any ethnicity): A sexy rock star. He decided to leave his successful hair/metal-rock band to try it solo. Self-important, confident, intriguing in all the wrong ways, the ultimate bad boy; he is all about sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll. Great comedic timing and a strong rock tenor voice. Stacee touches Sherrie’s chest and receives a lap dance.

JUSTICE/MOTHER (Black actress preferred): Actress with a strong presence and easy sensuality. Once a performer, she now operates a strip club where Sherrie winds up working. She takes on the maternal role for the girls that work for her. Strong, soulful vocals and belt are needed.

HERTZ KLINEMANN (any ethnicity): An attractive older German male. Uptight, cold, intimidating businessman trying to buy up the Strip to develop it. The bad guy of the piece. Strong comedic timing and baritone vocals.

FRANZ KLINEMANN (any ethnicity): Hertz’s son, a young German male. He works for his father, but not by choice. He is pressured and intimidated by his father. Shy, gentle, with a big heart. Strong vocals and comedic timing.

REGINA (any ethnicity): A fun, hippie-type, earthy girl who fights against the attempted takeover of The Strip. Strong comedic timing, belt vocals, and comfort in revealing/skimpy clothing. Regina protests by pouring gasoline on herself and threatening to light a match.

MAYOR/JA’KEITH/ENSEMBLE (any ethnicity): A strong character actor with good comedic timing to play numerous roles, strong rock tenor, and strong dance/movement ability.

JOEY PRIMO/ENSEMBLE (any ethnicity): A young male with a rocker sensibility, strong rock tenor, and strong/ dance/movement ability, possible understudy for Drew/Stacee.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE (any ethnicity): Three of the sexiest female singers/dancers around. Sassy & beautiful. Must be comfortable in very skimpy/sexy clothing. Strong dancers proficient in jazz and modern (“strip style dancing” included), comedic ability, and strong rock vocals. Will understudy principal roles.

 Audition Link

People will be seen in the order they arrive within their one-hour time slot.
The cast will be announced the night of May 17th after auditions. Registration will open once the show has been cast.

Auditions will be held in person. It is imperative that we are able to see what the students are able to do in the moment, with directed corrections, so no video submissions will be taken at this time. Concessions may be taken on a case by case basis, IF the student has performed with us in a past production/class. Please reach out to us directly if you feel this fits your situation.

Please prepare:

  • Bring with you some form of resume. If you have not performed in anything previously, that’s perfectly fine. Your resume should contain your name, age, any extracurricular activities you are involved in, any dance experience, any singing experience, any acting experience, etc.
  • Prepare 32 bars (roughly 1 minute) of a musical theatre song that showcases your vocal range in the style of the show. Bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided. We will also have a bluetooth speaker available if you’d prefer to use a recording of your music, but the recording should contain NO vocals whatsoever, even background singers.
  • Be prepared to be asked to cold read from the script. You may also be asked to read with others, so when your individual audition is complete, do not leave until you are told that you are clear to do so.
  • Be prepared to provide your schedule availability for the duration of the class. Absences for the rehearsal portions of the class as long as they are pre-arranged with the Director/Instructor, and are no more than 3, will not prevent you from being cast, however any absenses during tech week and performances will not be accepted. Emergency absences happen and should be coordinated on a case by case basis with the Director/Instructor.
Please sign up for a 1-hour time slot, you may or may not be used the entire hour, so students should prepare to bring something to occupy their time while waiting.
