Class Information
American English Dialects
Take a course in the many dialects of the United States. Class will cover dialects from the Northeast, South, and Midwest, decided upon by class members and take a text-based approach, meaning we will practice these dialects using theatrical texts written for the dialect being studied. This course will also offer an introduction to phonetics and phonology (the mechanisms of speech sounds, and the ways in which different dialects combine these sounds) which will cover basic IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) and physiological explanations of the vocal mechanisms. Actors will practice dialects using texts of their choosing and offer feedback to one another in order to help train the ear as well.
